Spring break trip to Fairbanks for the World Ice Art Championship

the carvings weren't as impressive as in previous years...but we're glad we went because it might've been the last one (the railroad may not renew the festival's lease in 2011 and beyond)
|
We also visited Chena Hot Springs where (in addition to soaking in the hot springs) we toured the geothermal power plant and the greenhouses. Throughout the winter they are maintained at 78°F while outside temperatures dropped to -56°F. This 134°F temperature differential was the largest recorded for any controlled environment production facility in the U.S. last year...and it's geothermal!
This is the tomato greenhouse...Abby was in love!
